Accessible information on every rail-replacement bus.

PDS turns Android tablets your operation already owns into PSVAR-compliant passenger displays — visual and audible route information, authored once on the dashboard, delivered to every vehicle.

Built for the Public Service Vehicles (Accessible Information) Regulations 2023.

A simulated journey on the passenger display — the live product behaviour, not a mock-up.

The problem

The regulations don’t care what the hardware cost.

A legal obligation

The Public Service Vehicles (Accessible Information) Regulations 2023 require audible and visible route and next-stop information on in-scope services — including rail replacement.

Bespoke hardware is priced for franchised fleets

Fixed audio-visual installations run to thousands of pounds per vehicle, professionally fitted — hard to justify on coaches that only sometimes run rail replacement.

Ad-hoc announcements don’t comply

A driver shouting stop names isn’t consistent, isn’t always audible, and isn’t visible at all. The regulations ask for both, every journey.

The proposal

Your tablets. Our system. Compliant journeys.

Instead of installing bespoke equipment in every vehicle, you buy ordinary Android tablets and add a PDS subscription — as many devices as you need, all managed from one place.

Bring your own tablets

Any reasonable Android tablet works. Mount it where passengers can see it, pair it with a code from the dashboard, and it becomes the vehicle’s passenger display.

Author routes once

Build each route on the dashboard from the national stop database. Clear spoken announcements are generated for you — no recording sessions, no text-to-speech surprises on the day.

Control the whole fleet centrally

Push route updates to every vehicle, monitor devices, and see journey summaries — from one dashboard, wherever your buses are.

See exactly what to buy — tablets, mounts, power and speakers — in the hardware guide.

How it works

Four steps to a compliant service.

01

Create your account and add your company. No sales call required.

02

Build your routes

Search real stops, set hail-and-ride sections, and generate the return route in one click.

03

Pair your tablets

A code on the dashboard, a code on the tablet. Each device downloads its routes and audio automatically.

04

Run the service

The tablet displays, announces, and keeps itself in sync — working offline for the whole journey.

Compliance

Compliance is the product, not a feature.

Announcements are pre-rendered, not improvised

Every route’s audio is generated and checked server-side before it ever plays on a bus — consistent, clear, and the same on every journey.

Visual and audible are equals

What is spoken is exactly what is shown. A passenger who can’t hear the announcement reads it; a passenger who can’t see the screen hears it.

Text sized to the regulation

Passenger text is rendered at the regulated physical size — at least 22 mm tall, calibrated to the screen — and is never shrunk to fit. Long names scroll instead.

Chime and flash on regulated announcements

Attention announcements are preceded by a chime and a screen flash, exactly as the demo above shows.

Hail-and-ride and diversions handled

Section starts and ends, diversions and missed stops are announced when the regulations require it — automatically, from GPS.

PDS is designed against the Public Service Vehicles (Accessible Information) Regulations 2023. Operators remain responsible for their own compliance.

FAQ

Common questions.

What tablets do we need?

Any mainstream Android tablet with GPS and Google Play services. Larger screens serve passengers better — recommended models, mounts, power and speakers are all in the hardware guide.

Does it work without mobile signal?

Yes. Routes and audio are stored on the tablet before the journey; position comes from GPS. Connectivity is only needed to receive route updates.

Who authors the routes?

You do, on the dashboard — it takes minutes per route. Stops come from the national NaPTAN database, so names and positions are right first time.

What happens when we edit a route?

The announcements re-render server-side and every tablet picks up the new version automatically. The dashboard shows you when it’s ready.

Is this a certified compliance product?

There is no certification scheme for PSVAR equipment. PDS is designed against the 2023 regulations requirement by requirement — and operators remain responsible for their own compliance.
